Why the Greek islands peak in May, not July

July and August get all the Greek island attention and most of the sunburn. May is when the country is actually at its best, and almost nobody talks about it.

Why now

Water temperatures in the Aegean hit the mid-60s by late May, which is swimmable for most people and refreshing rather than bracing. Air temperatures sit in the 70s, ideal for walking Santorini's caldera path or Mykonos's old town without melting.

Crowds are the real unlock. Cruise ships start calling more frequently in June, and peak European vacation season kicks in July through August. In May you'll find ferries with seats, restaurants that don't need reservations weeks out, and hotel staff with time to actually talk to you.

Prices track the crowds. Hotels in Oia, Imerovigli, and the nicer parts of Mykonos often run 30 to 50% below July rates. A boutique cave hotel that's $800 a night in peak season might run $400 in late May.

What to see or do

Stick to the classics but do them differently. Santorini without the cruise-day crush lets you actually enjoy the sunset without elbowing a stranger. Rent an ATV on a weekday and the winery trail in the south of the island feels private.

For a less-traveled option, skip Mykonos for Milos. The moonscape beaches at Sarakiniko are surreal, Kleftiko only reachable by boat, and the fishing village of Klima has houses literally built into the cliffs.

Naxos and Paros are where Greeks themselves vacation. More agricultural, better food, fewer influencers.

If you want cruise-adjacent, Virgin Voyages' Valiant Lady sails Mediterranean itineraries from Barcelona that include Greek islands, and the current sailor offers stack on select May sailings.

Getting there on points

Athens is one of the easier Europe redemptions on points. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club books Delta business class to Europe at competitive rates, and Flying Club takes transfers from Amex, Chase, Citi, and Capital One. Verify current rates before transferring.

Aeroplan partner awards to Athens via European hubs are another strong option. Aeroplan takes transfers from Amex, Chase, and Capital One.

For shorter hops within Greece, Aegean Airlines is a Star Alliance member, so United miles or other Star Alliance currencies work well for island-hopping without cash.
